A new test for morphine-like physical dependence (addiction liability) in rats

Abstract

A new test for physical dependence (addition liability) of drugs in morphine-dependent rats is described. It depends upon the abolition of spontaneous withdrawal writhing by drugs possessing morphine-like addiction liability. A quantitative estimation of addictive potency of narcotic analgesics is given and some evidence for the possible mechanism of this phenomenon of withdrawal writhing is presented.
