A new species of Nanochromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Mai Ndombe, central Congo Basin, Democratic Republic of Congo

title={A new species of Nanochromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Lake Mai Ndombe, central Congo Basin, Democratic Republic of Congo},
  author={Ulrich Kurt Schliewen and Melanie L.J. Stiassny},
Nanochromis wickleri, a new cichlid species from Lake Mai Ndombe in the central Congo basin, is described. The large, deep-bodied species differs from all congeners in the possession of an elevated soft dorsal fin ray count (10–11 vs. 5–8) and by the presence, in adults, of strongly produced membranous fin lappets on the second and third dorsal fin spines. Pending comprehensive phylogenetic analysis Nanochromis wickleri is tentatively placed within a morphologically diagnosable subclade of…

Congochromis, a New Cichlid Genus (Teleostei: Cichlidae) from Central Africa, with the Description of a New Species from the Upper Congo River, Democratic Republic of Congo

Abstract Congochromis, a new cichlid genus, is described on the basis of a suite of anatomical features of the cephalic laterosensory system, infraorbital series, oral dentition, and squamation. As

Phylogeny and age of chromidotilapiine cichlids (Teleostei: Cichlidae)

The presumption that paleogeographic patterns rather than ecological factors shaped the ancient divergence within chromidotilapiines, which predates the origin of the mega-diverse austrotilapiine lineage, comprising the majority of African cichlid species, is allowed.

Time and Origin of Cichlid Colonization of the Lower Congo Rapids

It is demonstrated that a high level of riverine diversity originated in the lower Congo within about 5 mya, which is concordant with age estimates for the hydrological origin of the modern lower Congo River.

Multigene fossil-calibrated analysis of the African lampeyes (Cyprinodontoidei: Procatopodidae) reveals an early Oligocene origin and Neogene diversification driven by palaeogeographic and palaeoclimatic events

Estimates indicate an early Oligocene origin for the Procatopodidae, as a consequence of the Eocene trans-Saharan epicontinental sea retreat, and indicated that major Neogene paleogeographical and paleoenvironmental events influenced procatopidids diversification (e.g., increase activity in the African rift; late Miocene aridification; Pliocene and Pleistocene climatic instability).

Synopsis of Freshwaters, Species Diversity, and Conservation Issues

Freshwaters of Democratic Republic of Congo are poorly studied because of different factors, including the geographic spread of the country, lack of expertise, and financial resources to invest in

Part I of the ichthyological type catalogue of the ZSM (Neumann 2006) reviewed the historic “Old Collection”, of which types were apparently lost in the Second World War. Part II refers to type

Nanochromis sabinae, a new cichlid species (Teleostei, Cichlidae) from the Upper Congo River area and Northeast Gabon

Nanochromis sabinae, a new cichlid species, is described from central and northeast Congo (Brazzaville) and southeast Gabon. It is differs from congeners in a combination of morphological characters

A New Species of Dwarf Cichlid Fish with Reversed Sexual Dichromatism from Lac Mai-ndombe, Zaire

Nanochromis transvestitus new species, known only from lac Mai-ndombe, differs from previously described Nanochromais in its sexual dichromatism: mature females acquire striking coloration unlike that in females or males of any other species, while males retain relatively drab coloration.

The genera of pelmatochromine fishes lTeleosteic Cichlidaerp A phylogenetic review

The phylogenetic relationships of the pelmatochromine taxa are studied, and the intrarelationships of the chromidotilapiines are examined, as well as the distribution of Pterochromis, Pelmatochromeis and the Chromidotillapiines.

Cichlid familial intrarelationships and the placement of the neotropical genus Cichla (Perciformes, Labroidei)

Analysis of the evidence currently available argues strongly in favour of a close phylogenetic relationship between Cichla and the sisterpair, Crenicichlas and Teleocichla; a taxon whose placement has been thought critical for successful intra-familial analyses.

An ecological and systematic survey of fishes in the rapids of the lower Zaire or Congo River

Nineteen new species are described from the Lower Zaire rapids, belonging to the genera Mormyrus, Alestes, Labeo, Bagrus, Chrysichthys, Notoglanidium, Gymnallabes, Chiloglanis, Lamprologus, Nanochromis, Steatocranus, Teleogramma, and Mastacembelus, most of them with obvious modifications for life in the rapids.
