Selective permeabilization of the mitochondrial outer membrane is an integral event in apoptosis induced by numerous stimuli. As a result, several proapoptotic proteins including cytochrome c are released from the mitochondrial intermembrane space to the cytoplasm. Cytochrome c then triggers activation of caspase proteases via the formation of a complex known as apoptosome.
