We developed a new method for phthalate exposure assessment that uses glucuronidase digestion of urine, solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry to analyze eight mono-esters of phthalates (1, 2). The mono-esters, one of the primary human metabolites of phthalate diesters, are monitored to avoid the ubiquitous background contamination of phthalate diesters.
