Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotypes and subgenotypes show distinct geographical prevalence. A genotyping analysis of 28 samples from asymptomatic HBV carriers from the Philippines gave a distribution of HBV genotypes as expected from a previous study: 54% B (15/28), C5 18% (5/28), 14% D (4/28), 7% A1 (2/28). In addition, 7% (2/28) of the samples showed a double infection with genotypes B and D. One of the isolates sequenced completely, ph105, did not group into one of the known subgenotypes after…
Identification and characterization of novel hepatitis B virus subgenotype C10 in Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
TLDR
To further characterize HBV in this country, 18 HBV-viremic samples obtained from blood donors in Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, were subjected to phylogenetic analysis of an 1.6-kb partial or full-length sequence.
Establishment of reference sequences of hepatitis B virus genotype C subgenotypes.
TLDR
Hepatitis B virus genotype C (HBV/C) has the largest number of subgenotypes (C1-C16) that vary with geography and isolates, and homology and phylogeny analyses showed that reference sequences had significant heterogeneity with isolates from other genotypes and subgenotype.
A novel hepatitis B virus (HBV) subgenotype D (D8) strain, resulting from recombination between genotypes D and E, is circulating in Niger along with HBV/E strains.
TLDR
Data suggest that, in Niger, genetic variability of HBV strains is still evolving, probably reflecting ancient endemic HBV infection.
High prevalence of hepatitis B virus genotype E in Northern Madagascar indicates a West‐African lineage
TLDR
The high prevalence and low variability of genotype E strains in only two villages, indicates a rather recent introduction of this genotype into Madagascar from West Africa, possibly through migration or slave trade, and the wider spread and genetic relationship of genotypes D with East African and Austronesian strains indicate an earlier introduction ofThis genotype.
Description of a New Hepatitis B Virus C6 Subgenotype Found in the Papua Province of Indonesia and Suggested Renaming of a Tentative C6 Subgenotype Found in the Philippines as Subgenotype C7
TLDR
A phylogenetic analysis using whole genomes showed that both C6 groups mapped to different clades, and it is suggested that the subgenotype C6 found in the Papua province of Indonesia shall keep the designation C6, whereas the tentative subgenotypes from the Philippines shall be called C7.
Under Construction: Classification of Hepatitis B Virus Genotypes and Subgenotypes
TLDR
Several largely overlapping definitions for HBV genotypes have been presented by leading experts in this field in the past and due to the lack of universally accepted rules, irregularities have accumulated within the last 20 years ofHBV genotype research.
A High Variability of Mixed Infections and Recent Recombinations of Hepatitis B Virus in Laos
TLDR
A high variability of mixed infections as a very probable breeding ground of multiple variable recombination events in Laos that so far have not led to new dominant strains is revealed.
Hepatitis B virus genotypes/subgenotypes in voluntary blood donors in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia
TLDR
HBV/B and HBV/C are dominant in Makassar, similar to most areas in Indonesia, and mutations in BCP which might be associated with severity of liver disease are less common.

Novel subtypes (subgenotypes) of hepatitis B virus genotypes B and C among chronic liver disease patients in the Philippines.
TLDR
Novel HBV subtypes (subgenotypes) C5 and B5 are prevalent in the Philippines, as well as HBV/Aa (A1), where such studies have not been carried out previously.
Phylogenetic relatedness and genetic diversity of hepatitis B virus isolates in Eastern India
TLDR
Using the complete genome analyses this study has confirmed circulation of the genotype C in Eastern part of India and demonstrated considerable genotypic heterogeneity of the Indian genotype D.
Relationship of serological subtype, basic core promoter and precore mutations to genotypes/subgenotypes of hepatitis B virus
TLDR
Using phylogenetic analysis and pairwise comparison of 670 complete hepatitis B virus genomes, it is demonstrated that nucleotide divergence greater than 7.5% can be used to separate strains into genotypes A–H andSerological subtype deduced from the S region and mutations/variations within the basic core promoter/precore region allowed genotyping of HBV with 97% sensitivity and 99% specificity.
Distribution and characteristics of hepatitis B virus genotype C subgenotypes in China *
TLDR
There are at least four subtypes of HBV genotype C: subgenotypes C1, C2 and two types of C/D recombinants CD1 and CD2 in China, which have a distinct geographic distribution.
Genetic Diversity of Hepatitis B Virus Strains Derived Worldwide: Genotypes, Subgenotypes, and HBsAg Subtypes
TLDR
The genetic diversity ofHBV and the geographical distribution of its subgenotypes provide a tool to reconstruct the evolutionary history of HBV and may help to complement genetic data in the understanding of the evolution and past migrations of man.
A novel variant genotype C of hepatitis B virus identified in isolates from Australian Aborigines: complete genome sequence and phylogenetic relatedness.
TLDR
This is the first report of the characteristics of complete nucleotide sequences of HBV from Australian Aborigines, which contribute to the investigation of the worldwide spread ofHBV, the relationship between serotype and genotype and the ancient common origin of AustralianAborigines.
Identification of a new hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype from Brazil that expresses HBV surface antigen subtype adw4.
TLDR
The complete genome of a hepatitis B virus from Brazil that expressed the subtype adw4 of HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) was cloned and sequenced and was found to be more divergent than any other HBV sequence thus far reported.
Classifying Hepatitis B Virus Genotypes
TLDR
Evidence is accumulating as regards the influence of HBV genotypes on the progression of chronic hepatitis B and response to antiviral therapies, and therefore, the genotype needs to be classified further into subtypes, especially if they are clinically relevant.
New Complex Recombinant Genotype of Hepatitis B Virus Identified in Vietnam
TLDR
Findings support the designation of the new genotype I of hepatitis B virus, HBV-VH24, which had a novel intergenotypic recombination between genotypes A, C, and G.
Clinical and Virological Characteristics of Hepatitis B Virus Subgenotypes Ba, C1, and C2 in China
TLDR
