Abstract: Collections of Batrachospermales from 13 stream sites in North America (Canada and United States), Europe (Spain) and Asia (China) were examined. Phylogenetic analyses of sequences data from the plastid-encoded ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase large subunit gene (rbcL) and the mitochondrial-encoded cytochrome oxidase 1 gene barcode region (COI-5P), along with morphological studies, suggested that these collections represent new taxa. Three species in a proposed new…
Revision of Batrachospermum section Macrospora (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) with the establishment of the new genus Montagnia
TLDR
Within the new genus, Montagnia is proposed, the characters used to circumscribe species were re-evaluated by examining type specimens as well as samples from North and South America, and species delimitation methods did not suggest that more than one species is justified.
Diversity of Batrachospermales (Rhodophyta) in the Iberian Peninsula
TLDR
Seven taxa reported in the region using current taxonomy are confirmed with sequence data and morphology, and biogeographic trends show a flora with most species being well represented in parts of Europe, two taxa that are shared between Europe and North America, and one cosmopolitan species.
Virescentia guangxiensis (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta): a new freshwater red algal species from South China
TLDR
This study expands the known species diversity and geographical distribution of freshwater Rhodophyta in China by reporting the first species of the order Batrachospermales reported in Guangxi and the secondspecies of the genus Virescentia reported in China.
Current status of freshwater red algal diversity (Rhodophyta) of the African continent including description of new taxa (Batrachospermales)
TLDR
It is estimated that 14 to 19 batrachospermalean taxa can be recognised for the African flora, and that with more study, that number could easily double or triple based on the diversity known from other well-studied continents.
The freshwater red algae (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) of Africa and Madagascar I. New species of Kumanoa, Sirodotia and the new genus Ahidranoa (Batrachospermaceae)
TLDR
Four new species and one new genus of freshwater red algae from the Batrachospermales are described, based on morphological and molecular evidence, among the first new descriptions since 1899 from the African continent and since 1964 from Madagascar.
Survey of Freshwater Red Algae from the Batrachospermales (Rhodophyta) in South Carolina
Abstract Freshwater red algae are important components of the algal flora in streams and rivers with high water quality. The order Batrachospermales is the most species-rich portion of the red algal
Revealing hidden diversity in the Sheathia arcuata morphospecies (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) including four new species
TLDR
Revealing hidden diversity in the Sheathia arcuata morphospecies (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) including four new species is revealed.
Adding to the freshwater red algal diversity in North America: Lympha mucosa gen. et sp. nov. (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta)

Adding to the freshwater red algal diversity in North America: Lympha mucosa gen. et sp.
Fourth addendum to the synoptic review of red algal genera
Abstract The fourth addendum to Schneider and Wynne’s 2007 “A synoptic review of the classification of red algal genera a half century after Kylin’s 1956 ‘Die Gattungen der Rhodophyceen’” is

Revision of section Setacea of the genus Batrachospermum (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) with emphasis on specimens from Brazil
TLDR
The analyses of rbcL and cox1 sequences revealed that section Setacea forms a well-supported clade, which was positioned close but clearly separated from some species of Batrachospermum usually called group ‘Australasica’.
Molecular and morphological evidence for Sheathia gen. nov. (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) and three new species
TLDR
It is found that heterocortication, the presence of both cylindrical and bulbous cells on the main axis, is an underlying synapomorphy of this clade Batrachospermum section Helminthoidea.
PHYLOGENY OF THE BATRACHOSPERMALES (RHODOPHYTA) INFERRED FROM rbcL AND 18S RIBOSOMAL DNA GENE SEQUENCES

DISTRIBUTION AND SYSTEMATICS OF BATRACHOSPERMUM (BATRACHOSPERMALES, RHODOPHYTA) IN NORTH AMERICA. 1. SECTION CONTORTA 1
Multivariate morphometrics and image analysis were used to determine the number of well‐distinguished infra‐generic taxa in the section Contorta of the freshwater red algal genus Batrachospermum in
MOLECULAR PHYLOGENY OF THE GENUS KUMANOA (BATRACHOSPERMALES, RHODOPHYTA) 1
TLDR
The phylogenetic analyses did not reveal any interpretable biogeographic patterns within the genus Kumanoa, and no intrageneric classification is recommended based on current knowledge.
Distribution and systematics of Batrachospermum (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta) in North America. 9. Section Batrachospermum: description of five new species
TLDR
Five new species belonging to Batrachospermum section Batrachespermum are described from North America, with unique forked trichogynes and spermatangia on one-celled involucral filaments.
Nocturama gen. nov., Nothocladus s. lat. and other taxonomic novelties resulting from the further resolution of paraphyly in Australasian members of Batrachospermum (Batrachospermales, Rhodophyta)
TLDR
A new genus, Nocturama, is proposed for a clade of Batrachospermum antipodites specimens based on the well‐resolved phylogeny and improved statistical support values for most nodes showed, providing a framework for taxonomic revision.
SYSTEMATICS OF THE BATRACHOSPERMALES (RHODOPHYTA)—A SYNTHESIS 1
TLDR
This taxonomic synthesis increases the level of monophyly within the Batrachospermales but minimizes taxonomic change where data are still inadequate, resulting in a few relatively conservative taxonomic changes.
DISTRIBUTION AND SYSTEMATICS OF BATRACHOSPERMUM (BATRACHOSPERMALES, RHODOPHYTA) IN NORTH AMERICA. 4. SECTION VIRESCENTIA 1
TLDR
Sections Setacea and Virescentia of Batrachospermum differ in whorl size, ratio of carposporophyte height towhorl diameter, and trichogyne stalking; hence, they continue to recognize them as being distinct taxonomic entities as originally described.
