The concept of electric energy is revisited in detail for semiconductors. We come to the conclusion that the main relationship used to calculate the energy related to the penetration of the electric field in semiconductors is missing a fundamental term. For instance, spatial derivate of the electrostatic energy using the traditional formula fails at giving the correct electrostatic force between semiconductor based capacitor plates, and reveals unambiguously the existence of an extra…

Comparative Study of Silicon Photonic Modulators based on Transparent Conducting Oxide and Graphene

Transparent conducting oxides and graphene have dominated research on optical modulation in recent years. Regrettably, studies are often unrealistic, which hinders a clear understanding of the state

Electro-optic modulation in integrated photonics

Electro-optic modulators are an indispensable part of photonic communication systems, largely dictating the achievable transmission rate. Recent advances in materials and fabrication/processing

The use of energy and co-energy for the evaluation of forces in non-linear, anisotropic dielectric solids

Abstract:In this paper, in spite of the wide diffusion of the method that makes use of suitable variations of the electric energy (or co-energy) for computing forces in non-linear, anisotropic

The entropy of electromagnetic polarization is considered and it is shown that unless the non-field entropy is used as the independent variable in the expression for the internal energy, the first law is violated and the meaning of heat flow is contradicted.
