Tahina J.Dransf. & Rakotoarinivo, gen. nov. (Arecaceae) is described as a new genus from north-western Madagascar, with a single species T. spectabilis J.Dransf. & Rakotoarinivo, sp. nov.Tahina is included within tribe Chuniophoeniceae of subfamily Coryphoideae, based on the strictly tubular imbricate rachilla bracts, the flowers grouped in cincinni with tubular bracteoles, and the stalk-like base to the corolla. This position is corroborated by evidence from plastid DNA. Lamina anatomy is… Expand

Systematics and Evolution of the Genus Phoenix: Towards Understanding Date Palm Origins
The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is an iconic crop of hot and arid regions of North Africa, the Middle East and up to northwestern India. It is a member of the genus Phoenix that constitutes aExpand
Comparative Gynoecium Structure and Multiple Origins of Apocarpy in Coryphoid Palms (Arecaceae)
Comparison of palm genera representing a broad phylogenetic range within the diverse subfamily Coryphoideae shows that coryphoid palms possess unusually diverse gynoecium morphology, especially with respect to carpel fusion, nECTary presence, and nectary location. Expand
A revision of Chuniophoenix (Arecaceae)
A revision of the Asian palm genus Chuniophoenix is given based on study of 22 herbarium specimens of wild origin from A, BH, FIPI, HN, IBSC, K, LE, MO, NY, and P. Three species are recognized,Expand
New species of Dypsis and Ravenea (Arecaceae) from Madagascar
Fourteen new species of palms (Arecaceae) from Madagascar are described and named, based on material collected over the last 15 years, seven are Critically Endangered and seven are Vulnerable. Expand
Beyond Genera Palmarum: progress and prospects in palm systematics
It is concluded that palm systematic knowledge is far from complete and that tools, such as GP2, only stimulate further scientific research and discovery, so many aspects of the palm Tree of Life still remain scarcely known. Expand
Spatio‐temporal history of the endemic genera of Madagascar
An Eocene/Oligocene onset for the origin of the Madagascan generic endemic flora, with the majority arising in the Miocene or more recently is supported, de-emphasize the importance of the Gondwanan break-up on the evolution of the flora. Expand
Phylogenomics and taxonomy of Lecomtelleae (Poaceae), an isolated panicoid lineage from Madagascar.
The study showed that NGS can be used to generate abundant phylogenetic information rapidly, opening new avenues for grass phylogenetics and showed that Lecomtella forms an isolated lineage, which justifies its treatment as a separate tribe: Lecmtelleae. Expand
Characterization of leaf anatomy in species of Astrocaryum and Hexopetion (Arecaceae)
Leaf anatomy of 23 species of the genus Astrocaryum and of the two species ofthe genus Hexopetion is described and an identification key to species is given based on leaf anatomy. Expand
Population modelling and genetics of a critically endangered Madagascan palm Tahina spectabilis
The models suggest that if the habitat where the species resides continues to be protected the species is unlikely to go extinct due to inherent population decline and that it will likely experience significant population growth after approximately 80 years due to the reproductive and life cycle attributes of the species. Expand
Contrasting patterns of genetic diversity between two endangered palms with overlapping distributions, Voanioala gerardii (Arecoideae) and Lemurophoenix halleuxii (Arecoideae), from North-east Madagascar
It is found that Voanioala gerardii populations are critically small but contain unexpectedly high levels of genetic diversity, which may indicate as yet undiscovered populations remaining. Expand

A new phylogenetic classification of the palm family
Summary. An outline of a new phylogenetic classification of the palm family ( Arecaceae , syn. Palmae ) is publishedwith the aim of validating new names of suprageneric taxa prior to the publicationExpand
A new subfamily classification of the palm family (Arecaceae): evidence from plastid DNA phylogeny
A new subfamilial classification of the palms is established, in which five subfamilies are recognized, rather than the six that were included in the previous classification, and critical basal nodes are now fully resolved and, in most cases, strongly supported. Expand
A guide is presented to indicate how to go about preparing good herbarium specimens of palms and what notes to make in the field and it is hoped the present article will reach a wider audience and encourage more careful palm collecting. Expand
Maximum entropy modeling of species geographic distributions
The availability of detailed environmental data, together with inexpensive and powerful computers, has fueled a rapid increase in predictive modeling of species environmental requirements andExpand
