Recent advances in phosphopeptide enrichment prior to mass spectrometric analysis show genuine promise for characterization of phosphoproteomes. Tandem mass spectrometry of phosphopeptide ions, using collision-activated dissociation (CAD), often produces product ions dominated by the neutral loss of phosphoric acid.
