A self-organizing, feature-extracting network (von der Malsburg, 1973) is extended to two feature dimensions to encompass line orientation and color. It is applied to McCollough effects, particularly longlasting, contingent-aftereffects. McCollough effects are thought to involve low-level associative memory in the form of synaptic modification.
