Although NGC 253 is one of the nearest starburst galaxies, the activity in its central regions is yet to be fully understood. Here we present new optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope of its central region, which reveal numerous discrete sources in a ring–like structure. This is combined with data at infrared, millimeter, radio and X–ray wavelengths to examine the nature of these discrete sources and the nucleus itself. We find that the majority of optical/IR/mm sources are young star…

The nucleus of NGC 253 and its massive stellar clusters at parsec scales
Very Large Telescope adaptive optics images of NGC 253 with resolutions down to 200 mas resolve the central 300 pc of this galaxy in ∼37 infrared (IR) bright knots, a factor of 3 larger than
Far-infrared mapping of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 with ISOPHOT ?
A 180 m map and strip maps at 120 and 180 m were obtained for the edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253 with ISOPHOT, the photometer on board the Infrared Space Observatory .W e compare these observa-
The collimated wind in NGC 253
Near-infrared Fabry-Perot imaging has revealed H2 emission extended to about 130 pc from the disk of NGC 253. It is closely related to the hot plasma observed in soft X-rays: filamentary H2 features
The Stellar Kinematic Center and the True Galactic Nucleus of NGC?253
We present the first sub-arcsecond resolution two-dimensional stellar kinematics and X-ray observations of the prototypical starburst galaxy NGC 253 which define the position and nature of the
Spatially resolved optical integral field unit spectroscopy of the inner superwind of NGC 253
We present optical integral field unit (IFU) observations (VLT/VIMOS-IFU and WIYN/SparsePak), and associated archival deep Hα imaging (MPG/ESO 2.2 m WFI), of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253. With
Multiwavelength study of the nuclei of a volume-limited sample of galaxies – II. Optical, infrared and radio observations
We present optical and infrared broad-band images, radio maps, and optical spectroscopy for the nuclear region of a sample of nearby galaxies. The galaxies have been drawn from a complete
A VLBI Study of Free-Free Absorbed Compact Radio Sources in the NGC 253 Starburst
The first wide-field, very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, obtained with the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA), have produced a 1.4 GHz
Mid-infrared imaging of active galaxies. Active nuclei and embedded star clusters
High resolution, mid-infrared (MIR) images of nine nearby active galaxies are presented. The data were obtained with the TIMMI 2 instrument mounted at the ESO 3.6 m telescope using a set of N -band
HST/WFC3 Observations of an Off-Nuclear Superbubble in Arp 220
We present a high spatial resolution optical and infrared study of the circumnuclear region in Arp 220, a late-stage galaxy merger. Narrowband imaging using HST/WFC3 has resolved the previously
Star formation in AGNs at the hundred parsec scale using MIR high-resolution images
It has been well established in the past decades that the central black hole masses of galaxies correlate with dynamical properties of their harbouring bulges. This notion begs the question of

An X-Ray Minisurvey of Nearby Edge-on Starburst Galaxies. I. The Data
We have analyzed all available ROSAT PSPC and HRI and ASCA data for a small far-infrared flux-limited sample of seven nearby edge-on starburst galaxies in order to search for hot gas in their halos.
VLA Observations of NGC 253: Supernova Remnants and H II Regions at 1 Parsec Resolution
The edge-on starburst galaxy NGC 253 has been imaged with the VLA at wavelengths ranging from 1.3 to 20 cm, with resolutions between 1 and 15 pc. These images reveal a large number of compact radio
A large family of compact radio sources in the starburst nucleus of NGC 253
Deep VLA maps of NGC 253 show that it has at least 35 compact radio sources similar to those in the prototypical IR starburst galaxy M82. It is noted that NGC 253 is a twin of M82 in IR spectrum and
Peculiar gas dynamics in the starburst galaxy NGC 253.
Here we present our first results of a study of the neutral hydrogen gas (Hi) in the southern spiral galaxy NGC253 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The relative proximity of NGC 253 makes
Do the Compact Radio Sources in NGC 253 and M82 Fade over Time
The nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 has been observed at a third epoch at 6 cm, and a second epoch at 3.6 cm, using the highest resolution configuration of the Very Large Array (VLA). Over a total
X-ray spectra and large-scale features of two starburst galaxies - NGC 253 and M82
The results of Einstein Observatory IPC X-ray observations of the well-known nearby starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. The major axis X-ray surface brightness profile of NGC 253 is
The Discovery of Young, Luminous, Compact Stellar Clusters in the Starburst Galaxy NGC 253
We report the discovery of four young, luminous, compact stellar clusters in the central region of the starburst spiral galaxy NGC 253. One cluster has an intrinsic M_v of about -15 or brighter, an
The 1 parsec radio core and possible nuclear ejection in NGC 253.
