We have devised a novel approach to tether the fullerene C[sub 60] to silicon surfaces via a (pyridyl)[sub n]-OsO[sub 4]-C[sub 60] coordination complex employing a pyridyl-terminated, self-assembled monolayer chemisorbed to the substrate. The structure of the (pyridyl)[sub n]-OsO[sub 4]-C[sub 60] monolayer complex tethered to the SiO[sub x] surface of the substrate, is fully consistent with both the profile and in-plane structures determined by high-resolution X-ray crystallography.
