The cardiac ventricular myocyte is a key experimental system for exploring the mechanical properties of the diseased and healthy heart. Millions of primary myocytes, which remain viable for 4-6 h, can be readily isolated from animal models. However, currently available instrumentation allows the mechanical properties of only a few physically loaded myocytes to be explored within 4-6 h. Here we describe a modular and inexpensive prototype instrument that could form the basis of an array of…

Calibrated micropost arrays for biomechanical characterisation of cardiomyocytes
TLDR
This study demonstrates that micropost systems can provide precise high-throughput test beds for myocyte mechanics using pharmacologic, small peptide, gene therapies or heart disease models.
Contractility assessment in enzymatically isolated cardiomyocytes
TLDR
A survey of various methodological approaches in the literature used to assess adult and neonatal cardiomyocyte contractility to include the most popular methods in terms of reliability and accessibility.
Integration of Skeletal Muscle Cell onto Si-MEMS and its Generative Force Measurement
TLDR
A cantilever-based force measurement Si-MEMS device was used for evaluating the generative force of the skeletal muscle cells and the results confirmed that the patterned myoblasts successfully differentitated into myotubes on the device.
Designing of a Si-MEMS device with an integrated skeletal muscle cell-based bio-actuator
TLDR
It is proposed that the C2C12-collagen film complex is a new generation actuator for MEMS devices that utilize glucose as fuel, which will be useful in environments in which glucose is abundant such as inside a blood vessel.
Cardiac Tissue Structure, Properties, and Performance: A Materials Science Perspective
TLDR
Novel measurement systems that account for design considerations for cardiac tissue property and performance measurements may improve future experiments and lead to greater insight into cardiac tissue structure, properties, and ultimately performance.
Application of stochastic system identification to the study of the compliance of electroactive polymers.
TLDR
A dynamic mechanical analyzer that is capable of making in situ measurements of the dynamic compliance transfer function of conducting polymers as a function of an electrochemical stimulus is developed.
A new bi-axial cantilever beam design for biomechanics force measurements.
Cell-laden hinged microplates for measuring the contractile forces of cardiomyocytes
TLDR
This work reports a method to measure contractile forces of cardiomyocytes at cellular level using microplates; pairs of single-cell sized plates are connected by a flexible hinge at the center, and believes that this method is a useful tool to study the biomechanics ofCardiomyocyte.

Mechanical properties of isolated cardiac myocytes.
TLDR
The ultrastructural and passive mechanical data strongly indicate that although the extracellular collagen limits the extension of cardiac muscle beyond the peak of the active length-tension relation, there is also a substantial cellular component of resistance to extension.
A force transducer for measuring mechanical properties of single cardiac myocytes.
TLDR
A transducer design capable of recording forces generated by single cardiac myocytes with sufficient temporal resolution to detect force responses to rapid length changes is described, well suited to analysis of mechanical properties of single ventricular myocytes.
A novel method to study contraction characteristics of a single cardiac myocyte using carbon fibers.
TLDR
A bell-shaped relation between the compliance under an auxotonic load and the work output of the myocyte, which was directly related to myocyte performance in the heart, was obtained.
Miniature heart cell force transducer system implemented in MEMS technology
TLDR
This novel MEMS force transducer system permits higher fidelity measurements from cardiac myocytes than available from standard macro-sized transducers.

TLDR
A novel instrument for measuring the mechanics of a single myofibril is described, which is capable of resolving tension down to 0.5 ng/square root Hz and controlling the my ofibril length with a 10-microseconds rise time.

Mechanically driven contour-length adjustment in rat cardiac titin's unique N2B sequence: titin is an adjustable spring.
TLDR
It is found in the present study that rat myocardium expresses predominantly the small N2B titin isoform, which allows us to characterize the elastic behavior of this isoform and functions as a molecular spring that is adjustable.
