A model for interference and forgetting
@article{Mensink1988AMF, title={A model for interference and forgetting}, author={Ger-Jan M Mensink and Jeroen G. W. Raaijmakers}, journal={Psychological Review}, year={1988}, volume={95}, pages={434-455} }
A new model for interference and forgetting is presented. The model is based on the Raaijmakers and Shiffrin search of associative memory (SAM) theory for retrieval from long-term memory. It includes a contextual fluctuation process that enables it to handle time-dependent changes in retrieval strengths. That is, the contextual retrieval strength is assumed to be proportional to the overlap between the contextual elements encoded in the memory trace and the elements active at the time of…

A well-known finding in memory research is the forgetting effect that occurs because of practicing some Item A on the recall of a related Item B. The traditional explanation for such interference…
On testing the strength independence assumption in retrieval-induced forgetting
- PsychologyPsychonomic bulletin & review
- 2016
Several, large-scale simulation studies using a simplified version of the SAM model are reported, showing that such correlations do not provide a good test for the strength independence assumption and will not be able to distinguish between inhibitory and noninhibitory explanations of retrieval-induced forgetting.
A progress report on the inhibitory account of retrieval-induced forgetting
- PsychologyMemory & cognition
- 2012
The goal of the present progress report is to critically review the inhibitory account of retrieval-induced forgetting and to provide direction so that future research can have a more meaningful impact on the understanding of human memory.

There is a need for a consistent and preferably formalized model that combines inhibition and competition as principal factors in forgetting.
A temporal ratio model of memory.
- PsychologyPsychological review
- 2007
The model embodies 4 main claims: temporal memory--traces of items are represented in memory partly in terms of their temporal distance from the present, scale-similarity--similar mechanisms govern retrieval from memory over many different timescales, local distinctiveness--performance on a range of memory tasks is determined by interference from near psychological neighbors, and interference-based forgetting.
