The cucumber mitochondrial genome is unique because of its large size, paternal transmission, and the existence of a paternally transmitted mosaic (MSC) phenotype spontaneously appearing after independent tissue culture experiments. Transmission studies eliminated paternal imprinting as the genetic basis for the MSC phenotype.
