A low complexity error recovery technique for wavelet image codecs with inter-subband dependency

Abstract

Error(s) in Huffman coded wavelet coefficients of a subband usually propagates till the end of subband. Self-synchronizing Huffman codes are used to limit the propagation of the error, by reestablishing synchronization. After regaining synchronization, the decoder may still not be able to align each symbol with its correct location due to the wrong number of decoded symbols in the error propagation region. A low complexity scheme is proposed in this research to identify the error propagation region in the subband of a wavelet coded image and re-align displaced coefficients by using inter-subband dependency between coefficients of a corrupted subband and its parent subband. It is demonstrated by experiments that the proposed technique provides a more robust image codec under different error conditions with a very little bit-rate overhead.
