A cast part is formed via casting process in which molten liquid is poured into and solidifies in a cavity enclosed by molds. Then, one obtains the cast part when the molds are removed. An important issue in the casting process is that a cast part should have a proper geometry so that the molds can actually be removed. Accordingly, in the optimization of a cast part one not only needs to optimize the performance of the cast part but also needs to ensure the cast part have a proper geometry…
Molding Direction Constraints in Structural Optimization via a Level-Set Method
This work develops an approach to handle the directional molding constraint for cast parts through a level-set method and shows several 3d examples of compliance minimization in linearized elasticity under molding and minimal or maximal thickness constraints.
Simultaneous optimization of cast part and parting direction using level set method
Parting direction is one of the main parameters that significantly affect mouldability and manufacturing costs of a cast part. In conventional optimal design of cast part, a parting direction is
Structural shape and topology optimization of cast parts using level set method
A level set-based shape and topology optimization method for conceptual design of cast parts that can be started from an arbitrary initial design, without the need for an initial design satisfying the cast constraint.
Manufacturable casting parts design with topology optimization of structural assemblies
A design method for manufacturable casting parts based on topology optimization of structural assemblies, which considers the geometry requirement and the manufacturing constraint of die-set material cost and the component manufacturability has been improved obviously.
Multi-component topology optimization for die casting (MTO-D)
This paper presents a multi-component topology optimization method for the structural assemblies that are made of components produced by die casting (MTO-D) processes, where each part is guaranteed
Manufacturing Constraints and Multi-Phase Shape and Topology Optimization via a Level-Set Method
The main contribution of this thesis is the implementation of manufacturing constraints in shape and topology optimization. Fabrication limitations related to the casting process are formulated as
Multi-material plastic part design via the level set shape and topology optimization method
This work presents a new multi-material level set topology optimization method which is developed especially for designing plastic parts, and employs only one level set function to describe the material/void interface.
On the formulation and implementation of geometric and manufacturing constraints in node–based shape optimization
We introduce a novel method to handle geometrical and manufacturing constraints in parameter–free shape optimization. Therefore the design node coordinates are split in two sets where one set is

A review of optimization of cast parts using topology optimization
This is the second part of a two-paper review of optimization of cast parts. In the first paper, we focused on the application of the original topology optimization codes. The problems with the

Topology optimisation has been proved to be a very effective tool in the early stage of the development process, in particular for cast parts. Nevertheless, the interpretation of the design proposals
Optimal riser design for metal castings
The optimal design of a casting rigging system is considered. The casting geometry is systematically modified to minimize the gate and riser volume, while simultaneously ensuring that no porosity
