Located in the remote, impenetrable and incompletely mapped rainforest of the Mosquito Coast, the legendary "Ciudad Blanca" of Honduras was never conquered by the Spanish. With time, it was slowly forgotten. JERS-1 and ERS-2 SAR images are used to identify and to locate the lost city, a task made difficult due to the thick vegetation cover. Among the techniques used to detect artificial targets under forest cover, new Bayesian speckle filters, particularly suited for the restoration of a…

Identifying Ancient Settlement Patterns through LiDAR in the Mosquitia Region of Honduras

TLDR
Prehistoric patterns of settlement and landuse for a critical valley within the Mosquitia derived from airborne LiDAR scanning and field investigation show that though today the valley is a wilderness it was densely inhabited in the past.

Archaeological prospection of north Eastern Honduras with airborne mapping LiDAR

TLDR
From the geodetic images produced the archaeologists identified the first-ever large scale settlements documented in the region, a region for which a comprehensive record of inhabitation prior the European contact is still lacking.

Sistemas de información geográfico y la preservación del patrimonio natural y cultural: la exploración de La Mosquitia hondureña

In May 2012, after more than a year of research and planning, a group led by cinematographer Steve Elkins and backed by Bill Benenson and Garry Spire, conducted the first ever airborne LiDAR

Wide-Angle Multistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar: Focused Image Formation and Aliasing Artifact Mitigation

Abstract : Traditional monostatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) platforms force the user to choose between two image types: larger, low resolution images or smaller, high resolution images.

Maximum-entropy methods for despeckling and resampling synthetic aperture radar images of rough terrain

SAR systems, like any coherent imaging system, are subject to (I) speckling effects, which considerably reduce the useful detail within the acquired scenes and (II), strong geometric distortions.

Control-systems principles applied to speckle filtering and geophysical information extraction in multichannel SAR images

Two new Bayesian Maximum A Posterior vector speckle filters are developed for multi-channel detected synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. These filters incorporate statistical descriptions of the
