We have identified a consensus operator sequence, YYYATTGTTCTC, which mediates the repression imposed by the ROX1 factor upon the members of the hypoxic gene regulon, which includes ANB1, HEM13, COX5b, and CYC7. The members of the regulon were repressed with widely varying stringency, and the variation was correlated with the number and fidelity of operator sequences observed.
