BACKGROUND Substance abuse frequently complicates the course of bipolar illness, promotes mixed states, and contributes to poor outcome in mania. Preliminary open trials suggest that anticonvulsant mood stabilizers may enhance remission rates and outcome for bipolar patients with substance abuse.
