The morphology of neurons in the “hilar region” of the hippocampus (fields CA3c and CA4 of Lorente de Nó, '34) was analyzed with several variants of the Golgi technique. Hippocampi were dissected from the brains of 28‐day‐old rats, fixed and impregnated by immersion, and sectioned perpendicular to the long axis. Based on the resident cell types, aspects of the neuropil, and published data related to afferent termination, the area under study was divided into four zones. At least 21 cell types…
Connections of the hippocampal formation in humans: I. The mossy fiber pathway
TLDR
All of the features, seen following injections of tracer into hippocampal slices from the brains of epileptics, were confirmed by calbindin‐staining of mossy fibers in normal brains.
Connections of the hippocampal formation in humans: II. The endfolial fiber pathway
TLDR
It is demonstrated that this is a continuous fiber pathway between the deep hilar region and CA2, and the hilar and CA3 pyramidal neurons contributed to this pathway.
The development, ultrastructure and synaptic connections of the mossy cells of the dentate gyrus
TLDR
The mossy cells have an immature appearance at birth and on subsequent days their maturation appears to lag somewhat behind that of the hippocampal pyramidal cells, although the density of typical spines and thorny excrescences is less than that found in adults.
Cellular and connective organization of slice cultures of the rat hippocampus and fascia dentata
TLDR
In the cultures containing the fascia dentata and the hippocampus proper the main cell and neuropil layers were organotypically organized when observed in ordinary cell stains, and the normal distribution of smaller cell populations of AChE‐positive neurons and somatostatin‐reactive neurons was demonstrated by histochemical and immunohistochemical methods.
An autoradiographic study of the organization of intrahippocampal association pathways in the rat
The longer associational connections of the hippocampal formation have been studied autoradiographically in a series of adult rats after small injections of 3H‐amino acids into each of its various
Subdivisions in the Multiple GABAergic Innervation of Granule Cells in the Dentate Gyrus of the Rat Hippocampus
TLDR
It is demonstrated that granule cells receive inputs from the local circuit axons of at least five distinct types of dentate neuron terminating in mutually exclusive domains of the cell's surface in four out of five cases.
A light and electron microscopic analysis of the mossy fibers of the rat dentate gyrus
TLDR
The axon collaterals of dentate granule cells have been analyzed with the aid of a computerized microscope, following intracellular injections of horseradish peroxidase in hippocampal slice preparations, finding that they are confined to the hilar region and correlated with the location of the granule cell body.

TLDR
Analysis of the development of large pyramids of layer V in the pallial region provided the most convincing proof for this mode of cortical development and suggests the possibility that embryonic synapses are estabilished sequentially along the apical dendrites of pyramidal cells as the cortical plate grows through the addition of new cells.
Autoradiographic and histological evidence of postnatal hippocampal neurogenesis in rats
TLDR
It is postulated that undifferentiated cells migrate postnatally from the forebrain ventricles to the hippocampus where they become differentiated, implicating that they may function as receptors of gonadal hormones.
Projection of the lateral part of the entorhinal area to the hippocampus and fascia dentata
TLDR
A third group of perforant fibers, bing intermediate to the others with regard to both origin and termination has been noticed in one animal.
Hippocampal innervation by serotonin neurons of the midbrain raphe in the rat
TLDR
Observations indicate that serotonin neurons of the midbrain raphe provide a highly organized innervation of the hippocampal formation in the rat.
Entorhinal activation of dentate granule cells.
TLDR
In rabbits, anesthetized with urethane-chloralose, the activation of the granule cells of the dentate area by perforant path fibres from the entorhinal area was studied by intracellular and extracellular recording and the efficiency of the perforan path excitatory synapses was greatly increased by raising the rate of stimulation.
Distribution of hippocampal mossy fibers in the rat. An experimental study with silver impregnation methods
TLDR
The distribution of the axons that arise in the fascia dentata and go to the hippocampus proper are dealt with by means of three‐dimensional reconstructions.
