A geographic mosaic of passive dispersal: population structure in the endemic Hawaiian amber snail Succinea caduca (Mighels, 1845)
@article{Holland2007AGM, title={A geographic mosaic of passive dispersal: population structure in the endemic Hawaiian amber snail Succinea caduca (Mighels, 1845)}, author={Brenden S Holland and Robert H. Cowie}, journal={Molecular Ecology}, year={2007}, volume={16} }
We used 276 cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI, 645 bp) and a subset of 84 16S large ribosomal subunit (16S, 451 bp) sequences to evaluate geographic patterns of genetic variation in 24 populations of the endemic Hawaiian land snail Succinea caduca spanning its range on six islands. Haplotype networks, gene tree topologies, pairwise molecular divergence and FST matrices suggest substantial geographic genetic structuring and complex dispersal patterns. Low nucleotide diversity and low pairwise…

Strong genetic structure and signs of population bottlenecks in the land snail Humboldtiana durangoensis in the Sierra Madre Occidental of Western Mexico
- Biology
- 2017
The genetic structure and demographic history of the endemic land snail Humboldtiana durangoensis within this mountain range is estimated, indicating that both geographic regions experienced a drastic reduction in their effective population size probably associated with the Pleistocene climatic changes.
Phylogeography of the widespread Caribbean spiny orb weaver Gasteracantha cancriformis
- BiologyPeerJ
- 2020
The authors' findings revealed a single widespread species of Gasteracantha throughout the Caribbean, G. cancriformis, while suggesting two recently divergent mainland populations that may represent separate species, diverging linages, or geographically isolated demes.
Moisture variables, and not temperature, are responsible for climate filtering and genetic bottlenecks in the South African endemic terrestrial mollusc Prestonella (Orthalicoidea)
- Environmental ScienceConservation Genetics
- 2013
The genetic variation within two species of the rare terrestrial snail genus Prestonella, an inhabitant of rocky areas along water courses in the southern Great Escarpment of South Africa, is assessed, and principal components anaylsis of climatic variables derived from two databases indicates that genetic diversity of the populations is correlated to moisture-related Climatic variables.
Land Snail Models in Island Biogeography: A Tale of Two Snails*
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 2009
Important phylogenetic lessons are emerging from studies of island snails and such studies will eventually allow estimation of ages of species groups, speciation rates, timing of the processes involved in community assembly, and other dynamics, all of which are important contributions to the overall understanding of evolution.
COLONIZATION HISTORY AND POPULATION GENETICS OF THE COLOR‐POLYMORPHIC HAWAIIAN HAPPY‐FACE SPIDER THERIDION GRALLATOR (ARANEAE, THERIDIIDAE)
- BiologyEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 2012
The finding of low genetic diversity at the youngest site coupled with the very high diversity of haplotypes on the slightly older substrates that are highly dissected by recent volcanism suggests that the mosaic structure of the landscape may play an important role in allowing differentiation of the adaptive color polymorphism.
Genetic Consequences of Pleistocene Sea-Level Change on Hawaiian Megalagrion Damselflies.
- Environmental ScienceThe Journal of heredity
- 2015
The genetic consequences of fluctuating island areas and connectivity using microsatellite analysis of 2 widespread, endemic Hawaiian damselflies suggests that Pleistocene fluctuations in sea level alternated between creating land bridges that facilitated gene flow between once and future islands, and ocean channels that inhibited dispersal.
Comparative genetic structure and demographic history in endemic galapagos weevils.
- Environmental ScienceThe Journal of heredity
- 2012
The future exploration of hybridization between the introduced and highland endemic species on Santa Cruz is proposed, especially given the expansion of the introduced species into the highlands, the sensitivity to past climatic variation detected in highland populations, and the potentially threatened state of single-island endemics.
Evolutionary genomics of endangered Hawaiian tree snails (Achatinellidae: Achatinellinae) for conservation of adaptive capacity
- Biology, Environmental SciencePeerJ
- 2021
This study clarifies evolutionary relationships within this model system for adaptive radiation, forming the basis for conservation strategies such as translocation, captive rearing, and hybridization trials to prevent the loss of capacity to adapt to rapidly changing environmental conditions.
Colonization history, ecological shifts and diversification in the evolution of endemic Galápagos weevils
- BiologyMolecular ecology
- 2008
The phylogeny proposes one intra‐island origin for Galapaganus endemics, but monophyly tests suggest a larger contribution of in‐situ speciation on older islands, and patterns of diversification rate variation on older and younger islands correspond to the volcanic activity or remnants of such activity, while the pattern of independent evolution of restricted habitat preferences in different islands suggests that habitat shifts could also have contributed to species diversity in Galap Paganus.
Molecular biogeography and diversification of the endemic terrestrial fauna of the Hawaiian Islands
- Biology, Environmental SciencePhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences
- 2008
While molecular studies on Hawaiian fauna have burgeoned since the mid-1990s, much remains unknown, and among multi-island species studied, complex patterns of diversification are exhibited, reflecting heightened dispersal potential.

It is suggested that population subdivision and expansion can occur across small spatial and temporal scales, which may facilitate the rapid spread of new character states, leading to speciation as hypothesized by H. L. Carson 30 years ago.
VARIATION IN SPECIES DIVERSITY AND SHELL SHAPE IN HAWAIIAN LAND SNAILS: IN SITU SPECIATION AND ECOLOGICAL RELATIONSHIPS
- Environmental ScienceEvolution; international journal of organic evolution
- 1995
The native land‐snail fauna of the Hawaiian islands was investigated from a combined perspective of ecological and historical, vicariant, and dispersalist biogeography, showing that island area, per se, had the strongest influence on numbers of species.
