Abstract For the measurement of exotic-atom X-rays we designed two gas scintillation proportional detectors (GSPDs) and a background suppression system. The suppression is based on the recognition of the characteristic pulseshape from X-rays absorbed in the detector. The pulseshape is obtained by operating the GSPDs in a prescintillation mode in which gas scintillation occurs also in the absorption region. At an antiproton beamline of LEAR, CERN, the background is reduced by a factor of ∼ 300.
