Case-based reasoning is emerging as a leading methodology for the application of artificial intelligence. We describe an investigation into the application of case-based reasoning in airport weather forecasting. Knowledge about temporal features that human forecasters use to construct analogous climatological scenarios is encoded in a fuzzy similarity measure. The fuzzy similarity measure is used to locate the k-nearest neighbours from the historical database. These nearest neighbours are in…

Weather Prediction by Integrating Recurrent Neural Network Dynamics into Case Based Reasoning

This paper presents a forecasting method for one day-ahead prediction of multiple weather attributes at a time by case based reasoning (CBR) in local scale, which resolves the attribute weighting problem of CBR using non-linear autoregressive with exogenous inputs neural network (NARXNN) and results a hybrid method for multiple weather Attributes forecasting.

WIND-3 is an application for aviation weather forecasting that uses the analog method to produce deterministic predictions of cloud ceiling height and horizontal visibility at airports and uses the retrieved analog ensemble, the set of most similar analogs, to make predictions of ceiling and visibility.

Weather Prediction Using Case-Based Reasoning and Fuzzy Set Theory

A fuzzy k-nn based prediction system, called WIND-1, is proposed, implemented, and tested and is tested with the problem of producing 6-hour predictions of cloud ceiling and visibility at an airport, given a database of over 300,000 consecutive hourly airport weather observations.

A Classical-REEP Short-Range Forecast Procedure

Abstract A statistical technique has been designed to assist in the forecasting of weather elements in the 0–12-h time period. The method uses only the last two surface hourly observations for a

Similarity Measures for Retrieval in Case-Based Reasoning Systems

This article focuses on the similarity measuring methods for CBR and reviews the existing methods for measuring similarity in the literature based on more than 100 CBR project studies and some general similarity measures seen in other applications.

Case-Based Reasoning: A Fuzzy Approach

This paper is an attempt at providing a fuzzy set-based formalization of case-based reasoning by assuming a principle stating that “the more similar are the problem description attributes, the moreSimilar are the outcome attributes”.

Precipitation Forecasting Using a Neural Network

A neural network, using input from the Eta Model and upper air soundings, has been developed for the probability of precipitation (PoP) and quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF) for the

Integration Rules and Cases for the Classification Task

A very rudimentary kind of integration for the classification task, based on simple heuristics, is sketched: “To solve a problem, first try to use the conventional rule-based approach, if it does not work, try to remember a similar problem you have solved in the past and adapt the old solution to the new situation”.

An Automated, Observations-Based System for Short-Term Prediction of Ceiling and Visibility

Abstract Several methods of generating very short term (0–6 h) probabilistic forecasts of ceiling and visibility are investigated: 1) an observations-based (OBS-based) system in which potential
