Skin hydration is one of the primary aims of beauty and anti-aging treatments. Barley (Hordeum vulgare) and soybean (Glycine max) are major food crops, but can also be used as ingredients for the maintenance of skin health. We developed a natural product-based skin treatment using a barley and soybean formula (BS) incorporating yeast fermentation, and evaluated its skin hydration effects as a dietary supplement in a clinical study. Participants ingested a placebo- (n = 33) or BS- (3 g/day…
Chemical Composition and Protective Effect of Young Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) Dietary Supplements Extracts on UV-Treated Human Skin Fibroblasts in In Vitro Studies
TLDR
The results indicate that young barley extracts, due to protective as well as restorative effect, could potentially be used in the production of nutricosmetics and skin care products.
Oral Intake of Collagen Peptide Attenuates Ultraviolet B Irradiation-Induced Skin Dehydration In Vivo by Regulating Hyaluronic Acid Synthesis
TLDR
Results show that oral administration of CP increases hyaluronic acid levels, which decreases during UVB photoaging, and suggest that CP can be used as a nutricosmetic ingredient with potential effects on UVB-induced skin dehydration and moisture loss in addition to wrinkle formation.
Fermented barley and soybean (BS) mixture enhances intestinal barrier function in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model
TLDR
This study suggests that BS has protective roles against inflammatory bowel disease through changes in inflammatory activity, tight junction protein expression, and gut microbiota composition in DSS-induced colitis.
A brief overview of the use of barley (Shaeer) as Tibb-e-Nabwi
TLDR
A brief overview of the barley’s nutritional profile, its health benefits, and its holistic therapeutic use is provided.
Effect of Fermentation Time on Antioxidant and Anti-Ageing Properties of Green Coffee Kombucha Ferments
TLDR
The obtained results indicate that both green coffee extracts and ferments can be an innovative ingredient of cosmetic products and that the fermentation time has a positive effect on the content of bioactive compounds and antioxidant properties.
Emerging Roles of Nutraceuticals from Selected Fermented Foods in Lifestyle-Related Disease Prevention
TLDR

Propionibacterium acnes related anti-inflammation and skin hydration activities of madecassoside, a pentacyclic triterpene saponin from Centella asiatica
TLDR
The in vitro study implied the potential medical and cosmetic application of madecassoside in skin protection through increasing the key moisturizing contributors of aquaporin-3, loricrin and involucrin in HaCaT keratinocytes as well as hyaluronan secretion in human dermal fibroblasts.
Sphingolipids in food and their critical roles in human health
TLDR
It is proposed that dietary SLs represent a “functional” constituent as emerging strategies for improving human health as well as gaps in research that could be of future interest.
Unsaturated fatty acid‐enriched extract from Hippophae rhamnoides seed reduces skin dryness through up‐regulating aquaporins 3 and hyaluronan synthetases 2 expressions
Seed oil of sea buckthorn (SBT) is well known to contain high amount of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA), and PUFA is generally acknowledged to promote skin hydration by reducing trans‐epidermal
Orobol, an Enzyme-Convertible Product of Genistein, exerts Anti-Obesity Effects by Targeting Casein Kinase 1 Epsilon
TLDR
Orobol attenuates high fat diet-induced weight gain and lipid accumulation without affecting food intake in C57BL/6J mice and underline its potential for development as a novel agent for the prevention and treatment of obesity.
