Antibiotic-resistant enterococci are major causes of hospital-acquired infections. The emergence of Enterococcus faecalis as a significant nosocomial pathogen is a consequence of its inherent resistance to certain antibiotics and of its ability to survive and proliferate in the intestinal tract.
