A deep ensemble approach to X-ray polarimetry

  title={A deep ensemble approach to X-ray polarimetry},
  author={A.L.Peirson and R.W.Romani},
X-ray polarimetry will soon open a new window on the high energy universe with the launch of NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Polarimeters are currently limited by their track reconstruction algorithms, which typically use linear estimators and do not consider individual event quality. We present a modern deep learning method for maximizing the sensitivity of X-ray telescopic observations with imaging polarimeters, with a focus on the gas pixel detectors (GPDs) to be flown on…

Deep Ensemble Analysis for Imaging X-ray Polarimetry

This work proposes a method for enhancing the sensitivity of X-ray telescopic observations with imaging polarimeters by using a weighted maximum likelihood combination of predictions from a deep ensemble of ResNet convolutional neural networks, trained on Monte Carlo event simulations.

Towards Optimal Signal Extraction for Imaging X-ray Polarimetry

We describe an optimal signal extraction process for imaging X-ray polarimetry using an ensemble of deep neural networks. The initial photo-electron angle, used to recover the polarization, has

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE)

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) expands observation space by simultaneously adding polarization measurements to the array of source properties currently measured (energy, time, and

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE): technical overview

The Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE) will expand the information space for study of cosmic sources, by adding linear polarization to the properties (time, energy, and position) observed in
