Neuroprotection represents a failed strategy to improve outcome after acute ischemic stroke (AIS). However, most neuroprotective drugs have been inadequately studied in animal stroke models, which led to the creation of the STAIR guidelines on preclinical and clinical testing of therapeutics for AIS.
