Treatment with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors could theoretically reduce ubiquinone tissue levels, a condition which could decrease resistance to oxidative stress. Further, effects of various HMG-CoA inhibitors may vary because of different lipophilicity and tissue distribution. To clarify this question, the effect after a 4 week treatment with lovastatin or pravastatin (0, 20, 40 or 80 mg/kg/day) on ubiquinone levels was evaluated in mature male rats (n=7 per dose).
