}The objective of this study was a) to compare patterns of drug use in fatal and nonfatal overdoses and b) to find out if toxic drugs are overrepresented in overdoses with fatal outcome. [] Key Method A total of 179 cases of fatal overdoses in Switzerland (population 6.6 million) were compared with 269 medically treated self-poisoners from the agglomeration of Berne (population 301,630).

It is concluded that intentional self-poisoning cases are a potential burden to public health and the predominance of paracetamol among adolescents needs further assessment.

Concomitant overdosing of benzodiazepines or analgesics is frequent in patients admitted with paracetamol poisoning and is associated with more severe toxicity, whereas concomitant Overdosing of opioid analgesics was associated with less toxicity.
Drug- and poison-related deaths in Victoria during 1997

- 2000
Drug overdose remains a common cause of death in Victoria, followed by the older and more dangerous antidepressant medications, and the newer selective serotonin and noradrenaline re-uptake inhibitors may not be as safe as was initially proposed.

There was no significant change in the rate of antidepressant overdoses between 1987 and 1990 and 1995 and 1997, but among females with a mood disorder overdoses decreased from 43% to 22% (p = 0.01), and the proportion of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in self-poisonings was significantly lower than expected from sales figures.
Suicides by drug poisoning among the elderly in Sweden 1969–1996

Rates of suicide using benzodiazepines increased in the elderly despite decreasing prescription sales, and Benzodiazepine should be prescribed restrictively to this age group.

Psychotropic overdose, especially with sedative-hypnotics, was a major method in suicide attempts and it is important that psychiatric patients are carefully evaluated and monitored for suicidality when prescribing psychotropics.

The demographic and clinical variables of a sample of subjects admitted to the Posisoning Treatment Centre (CAV), Niguarda General Hospital, Milan, following drug self-poisoning are described to identify the risk factors associated to parasuicidal gestures, with special care for the used drugs, the presence of psychiatric or organic disorders, alcoholism and drug addiction.

Deaths would be expected to be further reduced if there were reduced prescriptions of high toxicity drugs — and the continuing need for short-acting barbiturates, clomethiazole and chloral hydrate should be questioned.

Men accounted for 38% of the presentations and were more likely to have suicidal intent than women, and the combination of tricyclic antidepressant drugs and alcohol were the most dangerous.

Why do people use paracetamol for suicide?
- Medicine, PsychologyBritish medical journal

None of the 48 patients interviewed would have chosen paracetamol had they known that there would be an interval of two to three days before the onset of serious symptoms, and educating the public about the effects of an overdose would be more appropriate.
