Abstract While urogenital diseases of the female African hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) are common, such diseases in male animals appear rare. This case report describes a male African pygmy hedgehog presenting with urethral obstruction due to accessory gland enlargement. Preputial cystostomy provided effective treatment, and enabled maintenance of good quality of life over the long term. This suggests that preputial cystostomy may offer an effective salvage technique for African pygmy… Expand

Urinary diversion via preputial urethrostomy with bilateral pubic-ischial osteotomy in a dog
TLDR
A 4-year-old, 8.7-kg intact male Pekingese dog was presented with stricture of the urethral opening after a perineal urethrostomy revision surgery, and was able to urinate through the natural preputial orifice, avoiding urine scalding associated with Urethral anastomosis to the adjacent skin. Myxoma of the penis in an African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris)
TLDR
This report represents the first report of myxoma in a hedgehog and shows pleomorphic cells were pleomorphic, short spindle- and star-shaped cells with low cell density and rough endoplasmic reticulum was enlarged. Expand

TLDR
A modified perineal urethrostomy was performed in 14 males cats with partial or complete urethral obstruction, and the penile urethra was anastomosed to the preputial mucosa to enlarge and lengthen the urethRA. Expand
Intervertebral Disc Disease in African Hedgehogs (Atelerix albiventris): Four Cases
TLDR
Clinical evaluation for disc disease is recommended in hedgehogs with signs of ambulatory dysfunction based on this case series, which revealed narrowing of the cervical intervertebral spaces and spondylosis. Expand
Prepubic urethrostomy opening within a prepuce in a dog: a case report
TLDR
The prepubic urethrostomy procedure has been shown to be a long-term diversion technique in dogs with intrapelvic urethral damage and can reduce postoperative peristomal skin irritation and leads to better cosmetic appearance than the standard technique. Expand

TLDR
Nine animals, two dogs and seven cats, are presented here as a clinical representation of the benefits of prepubic urethrostomy. Expand

TLDR
Based on this study, it is recommended that all captive hedgehogs be examined regularly for timely diagnosis and treatment of common diseases of this species. Expand
Prepubic urethrostomy: A long-term study in 16 cats.
TLDR
PPU is a salvage procedure that is successful in relieving the signs of urinary tract obstruction and preventing further obstruction, however, potential complications should limit its use to cases in which standard techniques for perineal urethrostomy cannot be performed. Expand

TLDR
This article reviews previously reported neoplasms of the hedgehog by system to provide the practitioner with a relevant and practical guide to the management of neoplasia in the African hedgehog. Expand
Subtotal penile amputation and preputial urethrostomy in a dog.
TLDR
Preputial urethrostomy eliminates the potential for local skin irritation during urination in dogs and is easier to perform in those dogs in which penile amputation is required adjacent to the preputial fornix. Expand
