Based on detailed 2D numerical radiation hydrodynamics (RHD) calculations of time-dependent compressible convection, we have studied the dynamics and thermal structure of the convective surface layers of solar-type stars. The RHD models provide information about the convective efficiency in the superadiabatic region at the top of convective envelopes and predict the asymptotic value of the entropy of the deep, adiabatically stratified layers. This information is translated into an effective… Expand

Simulations of stellar convection with CO5BOLD
TLDR
The CO5BOLD code described in this article is designed for so-called ''realistic'' simulations that take into account the detailed microphysics under the conditions in solar or stellar surface layers (equation-of-state and optical properties of the matter). Expand

A non-local and time-dependent theory of convection was briefly described. This theory was used to calculate the structure of solar convection zones, the evolution of massive stars, lithium depletionExpand
Key issues review: numerical studies of turbulence in stars.
TLDR
Three major problems of single-star astrophysics are convection, magnetic fields and rotation, and Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) analysis of the numerical simulations has been shown to provide a novel and quantitative estimate of resolution errors. Expand
NON-GREY RADIATIVE TRANSFER IN THE PHOTOSPHERIC CONVECTION : VALIDITY OF THE EDDINGTON APPROXIMATION
The aim of this study is to describe the physical processes taking place in the solar photosphere. Based on 3D hydrodynamic simulations including a detailed radiation transfer scheme, we investigateExpand
Solar Surface Convection
TLDR
Radiative-hydrodynamical simulations of solar surface convection can be used as 2D/3D time-dependent models of the solar atmosphere to predict the emergent spectrum, and the resulting detailed spectral line profiles agree spectacularly well with observations without invoking any micro- and macroturbulence parameters. Expand
Solar-Type Stars with the Suppression of Convection at an Early Stage of Evolution
The evolution of a solar-mass star before and on the main sequence is analyzed in light of the diminished efficiency of convection in the first 500 Myr. A numerical simulation has been performed withExpand
Modelling of stellar convection
TLDR
A historically oriented introduction offers first glimpses on the physics of stellar convection and a number of important trends such as how to further develop low-dimensional models, how to use 3D models for that purpose, what effect recent hardware developments may have on 3D modelling, and others are reviewed. Expand
Realistic simulations of stellar surface convection with ANTARES: I. Boundary conditions and model relaxation
Abstract We have implemented open boundary conditions into the ANTARES code to increase the realism of our simulations of stellar surface convection. Even though we greatly benefit from the highExpand
2D Numerical Simulation of Stellar Convection
The dynamics and thermal structure of the surface layers of stars with outer convection zones can be studied in some detail by means of numerical simulations of time-dependent compressibleExpand
