The goal of this article is to contribute towards the conceptual and quantitative understanding of the evolutionary benefits for (microbial) populations to maintain a seed bank consisting of dormant individuals when facing fluctuating environmental conditions. To this end, we discuss a class of ‘2-type’ branching processes describing populations of individuals that may switch between ‘active’ and ‘dormant’ states in a random environment oscillating between a ‘healthy’ and a ‘harsh’ state. We…
Principles of seed banks: complexity emerging from dormancy.
TLDR
The fundamental attributes and emergent phenomena associated with dormancy and seed banks are outlined, with the goal of developing a unifying framework that can address problems in the life sciences, ranging from global change to cancer biology.
$\Lambda$-coalescents arising in populations with dormancy
TLDR
It is shown that because an individual that wakes up unusually early can have a large number of surviving descendants, for some choices of model parameters the genealogy of the population will be described by a $\Lambda$-coalescent.
Λ-coalescents arising in populations with dormancy
TLDR
It is shown that because an individual that wakes up unusually early can have a large number of surviving descendants, for some choices of model parameters the genealogy of the population will be described by a Λ-coalescent, and the beta coalescent can describe theGenealogy when the rate at which individuals wake up increases exponentially over time.
Quiescence Generates Moving Average in a Stochastic Epidemiological Model with One Host and Two Parasites
TLDR
This work develops a deterministic coevolutionary model with two parasite types infecting one host type and study analytically the stability of the dynamical system, and develops a stochastic version of the model to study the influence of quiescence on Stochasticity of the system dynamics.
Spatial populations with seed-banks in random environment: III. Convergence towards mono-type equilibrium
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Moran model with seed-banks introduced in [20]. Populations comprising active and dormant individuals are spatially structured in colonies labelled by Z d , d
The Contact Process with Switching
A BSTRACT . In this paper, we introduce a type switching mechanism for the Contact Process on the lattice Z d . That is, we allow the individual particles/sites to switch between two (or more) types
Λ-coalescents arising in a population with dormancy
TLDR
It is shown that because an individual that wakes up unusually early can have a large number of surviving descendants, for some choices of model parameters the genealogy of the population will be described by a Λ -coalescent, and the beta coalescent can describe theGenealogy when the rate at which individuals wake up increases exponentially over time.
Seed balancing selection: Coexistence in seedbank models
TLDR
Besides finding yet another way in which genetic reservoirs increase the genetic variability, it is found that if a population that sustains a seedbank competes with one that does not, the seed producers will have a selective advantage if they reproduce faster, but will not have a selection disadvantage if they reproduced slower: their worst case scenario is balancing selection.

Evolution with a seed bank: The population genetic consequences of microbial dormancy
TLDR
This work investigates how seed banks affect the processes underpinning evolution by reviewing existing theory, implementing novel simulations, and determining how and when dormancy can influence evolution as a population genetic process and extends the analysis to examine how seed Banks can alter macroevolutionary processes, including rates of speciation and extinction.
Invasion and fixation of microbial dormancy traits under competitive pressure
Microbial seed banks: the ecological and evolutionary implications of dormancy
TLDR
This Review highlights mechanisms that have evolved in microorganisms to allow them to successfully enter and exit a dormant state, and discusses the implications of microbial seed banks for evolutionary dynamics, population persistence, maintenance of biodiversity, and the stability of ecosystem processes.
Microscale Insight into Microbial Seed Banks
TLDR
It is hypothesized that dimensions of spatial, trophic, and resource complexity determine rates of encounter, which in turn, drive the abundance, productivity, and size of seed banks, and suggest that microbial seed banks emerge from microscale dimensions of ecological complexity and their influence on resource limitation and energetic costs.
Modelling the survival of bacteria in drylands: the advantage of being dormant
TLDR
The results of the simple model introduced here indicate that under a constant, even though low, supply of water the dormant strategy does not provide any benefit and it can, instead, decrease the chances of survival of the population.

Abstract The strong mechanistic relationship between climatic factors and seed dormancy and germination suggests that forecast climatic changes will significantly affect seed bank persistence. This
Does Dormancy Increase Fitness of Bacterial Populations in Time-Varying Environments?
TLDR
Analytical methods show that both switching strategists have higher fitness than a dormancy-incapable organism when good times are rare and that responsive switcher has higher Fitness than stochastic switcher whenGood times are either rare or common.
Genetic Variability Under the Seedbank Coalescent
TLDR
The results indicate that the presence of a large seedbank considerably alters the distribution of some distance statistics, as well as the site-frequency spectrum, and one should be able to detect from genetic data the existence of aLarge seedbank in natural populations.
