STUDY OBJECTIVES To evaluate the contribution of different world regions in respiratory research productivity. METHODS The world was divided into nine regions based on a combination of geographic, economic, and scientific criteria. Using the PubMed database, we retrieved information about the origin of articles from 30 journals included in the Respiratory System category of the Journal Citation Reports database for a 9-year period (1995 to 2003). We estimated the total number of publications…

Figures and Tables from this paper

A bibliometric analysis by geographic area of published research in several biomedical fields, 1995–2003
TLDR
It is found that Western Europe leads the world in published research on infectious diseases–microbiology and in cardiopulmonary medicine, whereas the United States ranks first in the fields of preventive medicine, public health and epidemiology both in quantity and quality.
A bibliometric analysis of scientific production in cancer molecular epidemiology.
TLDR
'Genetic polymorphism, glutathione transferase, breast neoplasm, risk factors, case-control studies and polymerase chain reaction' were the most used keywords in each of the subgroups evaluated, although inclusion criteria may have privileged studies dealing with exogenous carcinogens.
Scientific publications in respiratory journals from Chinese authors in various parts of North Asia: a 10-year survey of literature
TLDR
The total number of published articles from the three major regions of China has increased notably from 2000 to 2009, and the annual number of publications by ML researchers exceeded those from TW and HK, however, the quality of articles fromTW and HK is better than that from ML.
Geographic Origin of Publications in Urological Journals
TLDR
The USA is the most productive country in terms of absolute number of urological publications and when population size is taken into consideration, smaller European countries were more productive.
A bibliometric analysis in the fields of preventive medicine, occupational and environmental medicine, epidemiology, and public health
TLDR
USA researchers maintain a leadership position in the production of scientific articles in the fields of Preventive Medicine, Occupational/Environmental Medicine and Epidemiology, at a level similar to other scientific disciplines, while USA contribution to science in the field of Public Health is by all means outstanding.
A bibliometric analysis of diets and breast cancer research.
TLDR
Although the United States produced the most publications, European nations per capita were higher in publication output and Sweden had the highest productivity of publication when adjusted for number of population.
The production of articles on cardiology from Latin America in Medline indexed journals.
TLDR
The scientific production in Cardiology from Latin America shows dramatic differences among the countries, and Brazil, Mexico, and Argentina alone provide 80% of the publications.
A bibliometric study of literature on SLE research in PubMed (2002–2011)
TLDR
The steady increase of publication in SLE research can be seen during the whole study period from 2002 to 2011, and lupus research publications in developing countries have lagged behind.

TLDR
Leader of research productivity (in terms of absolute numbers) were Western Europe and the USA and Canada was the leader in productivity when adjustments for gross domestic product and population were made.

Interpreting COPD prevalence estimates: what is the true burden of disease?
TLDR
The overall prevalence of COPD in adults appears to lie between 4% and 10% in countries where it has been rigorously measured, and some of the variation attributed to differences in risk exposure or population characteristics may be influenced by the methods and definitions used to measure disease.
Bibliometrics and evaluation of research performance.
TLDR
It is concluded that citations measure recognition of a piece of work by the international scientific community, but are also influenced by publication structures, citation conventions and social relations in the scientific community.
