A free-flying pigeon is capable of a variety of steady and unsteady states of flight, such as climbing, descending, turning, gliding, flying horizontally, landing, taking off and so on. This paper is concerned with the mechanics of one type of steady flight, that is, straight gliding flight at constant speed.
