THE unique expression "a wandering Aramean was my father" in Deut. 26:5 has attracted a variety of comments and interpretations. S. R. Driver expressed the common understanding: "Jacob is so styled, with intentional disparagement, on account of his foreign connexions; his mother's home had been in Aram-Naharaim (Gn. 2410.24), and he spent himself many years in the same country (Gn. 29-31) in the service of his mother's brother, Laban 'the Aramaean'. . . ."'
