Experimental techniques have been developed to allow the investigation of metal flows during friction stir welding. The techniques are based on the use of a marker material that is re-distributed during welding. In the examples shown, copper strips (0.1mm thick) were used as markers. After welding various methods were used to investigate the marker movement including; radiography, tomography and metallurgical sectioning. Examples of the material distortions are shown.
