Altruists often seem to produce results that fall short of their intentions. I examine this tension in a model where altruists derive warm glow from their perceptions, as opposed to actual outcomes. Perceptions and reality can diverge when feedback is incomplete: a donor who supports an international development project, for example, may learn little about its results.
