Abstract

I NDIVIDUALS whose erythrocytes are deficient in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase ( G6PD ) have an inborn proclivity to hemolyze upon exposure to certain drugs or upon ingestion of fava beans.1’2 Next to blood-group incompatibility, this metabolic error is the commonest potential mechanism for hemolytic disease in man.2 In the United States alone, nearly 3,000,000 people carry the gene for this disorder.
