We report a wide-field imaging survey of the globular cluster (GC) populations around M87 with Suprime-Cam on the 8.2 m Subaru telescope. By investigating the GC colour distributions and surface number densities as a function of distance from the host galaxy, we argue that the contribution of GCs associated with the Virgo cluster (i.e. intergalactic GCs) is insignificant around M87; most of the blue GCs around luminous ellipticals as well as the red GCs are presumably associated with the host…

THE NEXT GENERATION VIRGO CLUSTER SURVEY. VIII. THE SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF GLOBULAR CLUSTERS IN THE VIRGO CLUSTER

We report on a large-scale study of the distribution of globular clusters (GCs) throughout the Virgo cluster, based on photometry from the Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS), a large imaging

THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER SYSTEM IN M87: A WIDE-FIELD STUDY WITH CFHT/MEGACAM

Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Megacam data in (g′, r′, i′) are used to obtain deep, wide-field photometry of the globular cluster system (GCS) around M87. A total of 6200 GCs brighter than i′ = 23.0

A quantitative link between globular clusters and the stellar haloes in elliptical galaxies

This paper explores the quantitative connection between globular clusters and the ‘diffuse’ stellar population of the galaxies they are associated with. Both NGC 1399 and NGC 4486 (M87) are well

WIDE-FIELD PRECISION KINEMATICS OF THE M87 GLOBULAR CLUSTER SYSTEM

We present the most extensive combined photometric and spectroscopic study to date of the enormous globular cluster (GC) system around M87, the central giant elliptical galaxy in the nearby Virgo

To the Edge of M87 and Beyond: Spectroscopy of Intracluster Globular Clusters and Ultracompact Dwarfs in the Virgo Cluster

We present the results of a wide-field spectroscopic survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo cluster. We obtain spectra for 201 GCs and 55 ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) using Hectospec on the

Galaxy structure from multiple tracers – I. A census of M87's globular cluster populations

We present a new photometric catalogue of the rich globular cluster (GC) system around M87, the brightest cluster galaxy in Virgo. Using archival Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey (NGVS) images in

Characterization of very high energy gamma-radiation from active galactic nuclei observed by the magic telescopes

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are bright compact regions in the centres of galaxies, that emit radiation across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Th

The innermost globular clusters of M87

We present a comprehensive multiwavelength photometric analysis of the innermost (∼3 × 3kpc 2 ) 110 globular clusters (GCs) of M87. Their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) were built taking

THE NEXT GENERATION VIRGO CLUSTER SURVEY-INFRARED (NGVS-IR). I. A NEW NEAR-ULTRAVIOLET, OPTICAL, AND NEAR-INFRARED GLOBULAR CLUSTER SELECTION TOOL

The NGVS-IR project (Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey–Infrared) is a contiguous, near-infrared imaging survey of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It complements the optical wide-field survey of

THE RICH GLOBULAR CLUSTER SYSTEM OF ABELL 1689 AND THE RADIAL DEPENDENCE OF THE GLOBULAR CLUSTER FORMATION EFFICIENCY

We study the rich globular cluster (GC) system in the center of the massive cluster of galaxies Abell 1689 (z = 0.18), one of the most powerful gravitational lenses known. With 28 Hubble Space
