Breakthrough Starshot is an initiative to propel a sailcraft to Alpha Centauri within the next generation. As the sailcraft transits Alpha Centauri at 0.2 c, it looks for signs of life by imaging planets and gathering other scientific data. After the transit, the 4.1-meter diameter sailcraft downlinks its data to an Earth-based receiver. The present work estimates the raw data rate of a 1.02 {\mu}m, 100 Watt laser that is received at 1.25 {\mu}m by a 30-meter telescope. The telescope receives…

Project Lyra: Catching 1I/'Oumuamua -- Using Laser Sailcraft in 2030
Discovered in October 2017, the interstellar object designated 1I/'Oumuamua was the first such object to be observed travelling through our solar system. 1I/'Oumuamua has other characteristics never
Relaying Swarms of Low-Mass Interstellar Probes
TLDR
Taking into account launch and collector area costs, the direct configuration is found to achieve lower overall cost by a wide margin over a range of cost parameter values and data rates.
Low-cost precursor of an interstellar mission
The solar photon pressure provides a viable source of thrust for spacecraft in the solar system. Theoretically it could also enable interstellar missions, but an extremely small mass per cross
Technological Challenges in Low-mass Interstellar Probe Communication
TLDR
The primary goal is to identify major challenges or showstoppers if such a downlink were to be constructed using currently available off-the-shelf technology, and thereby provide direction and motivation to future research on the constituent design challenges and technologies.

Interstellar Mission Communications Low Background Regime
TLDR
It is concluded that aperture synthesis with controlled optical beam forming may be required to reject radiation from the target star, and Fundamental limits on the photon efficiency are compared to a concrete modulation/coding design in the presence of weather-based outages.

Abstract Breakthrough Starshot is an initiative to prove ultra-fast light-driven nanocrafts, and lay the foundations for a first launch to Alpha Centauri within the next generation. Along the way,
The Andromeda Study: A Femto-Spacecraft Mission to Alpha Centauri
This paper discusses the physics, engineering and mission architecture relating to a gram-sized interstellar probe propelled by a laser beam. The objectives are to design a fly-by mission to Alpha
A Roadmap to Interstellar Flight
In the nearly 60 years of spaceflight we have accomplished wonderful feats of exploration that have shown the incredible spirit of the human drive to explore and understand our universe. Yet in those
High-contrast imaging with ELTs: effects of cophasing and AO residual errors on the PSF contrast
Direct detection and characterization of terrestrial extrasolar planets are now a high-priority scientific program where new major results from extremely large telescopes (ELTs) are expected. This
An atmospheric radiation model for Cerro Paranal - I. The optical spectral range
Aims. The Earth’s atmosphere affects ground-based astronomical observations. Scattering , absorption, and radiation processes deteriorate the signal-to-noise ratio of the data received. For
An advanced scattered moonlight model for Cerro Paranal
The largest natural source of light at night is the Moon, and it is the major contributor to the astronomical sky background. Being able to accurately predict the sky background, including scattered
How dusty is Centauri? Excess or non-excess over the infrared photospheres of main-sequence stars
Context. Debris discs around main-sequence stars indicate the presence of larger rocky bodies. The components of the nearby, solar-type binary αCentauri have higher than solar metallicities, which is

Deep-Space Optical Communications Downlink Budget: Modulation and Coding
TLDR
This article describes several properties of the channel capacity that lead to an appropriate selection of modulation format, pulse-position modulation order, and error-control code rate, and describes performance limits when additional constraints are imposed.
