A recent increase in published studies of lianas has been paralleled by a proliferation of protocols for censusing lianas. This article seeks to increase uniformity in liana inventories by providing specific recommendations for the determination of which taxa to include, the location of diameter measurement points on individual stems, the setting of minimum stem diameter cutoffs, the treatment of multiple‐stemmed and rooted clonal groups, and the measurement of noncylindrical stems. Censusing and Measuring Lianas: A Quantitative Comparison of the Common Methods 1

A new allometric equation relating diameter and biomass developed from 424 lianas from five independent data sets collected in four countries is presented, suggesting that the equations may be broadly applicable to cross-study comparisons.

Supplemental protocol for liana censuses

Biogeographical Patterns of Liana Abundance and Diversity

This chapter examines the pantropical patterns of liana abundance and species diversity and their correlates with climatic characteristics to gain insight into which processes are important for the

Increasing Liana Abundance and Basal Area in a Tropical Forest: The Contribution of Long‐distance Clonal Colonization

The hypothesis that lianas are increasing in old-growth forests, and that long-distance clonal colonization is a major contributor is supported, is supported.

Liana Abundance, Diversity, and Distribution on Barro Colorado Island, Panama

The data confirm that lianaas contribute substantially to tropical forest stem density and diversity, they have highly clumped distributions that appear to be driven by clonal stem recruitment into treefall gaps, and they are increasing relative to trees, thus indicating that lianas will play a greater role in the future dynamics of BCI and other neotropical forests.

What controls liana success in Neotropical forests

The availability of host trees and their characteristics may be more important than the direct effects of the physical environment in controlling the success of lianas in Neotropical forests.

Author ' s personal copy Supplemental protocol for liana censuses

A supplemental protocol is presented that covers a number of recurring situations that were critical for accurate and repeatable liana censuses, but were not covered in the protocol of Gerwing and colleagues.

The impact of lianas on 10 years of tree growth and mortality on Barro Colorado Island, Panama

One of the largest studies ever conducted on lianas is used to confirm the negative effects of lianaas on tree growth and survival over 10 years, and liana infestation of trees was widespread, dynamic and increasing on BCI.

Liana assemblage structure in four sites across the Brazilian Amazon

This chapter presents a study conducted on four sites in the Brazilian Amazon. These sites were used without evidence of recent anthropic impact, to sample liana and tree density and basal area (BA).

ARE LIANAS INCREASING IN IMPORTANCE IN TROPICAL FORESTS? A 17‐YEAR RECORD FROM PANAMA

The Barro Colorado Island leaf production data are consistent with the hypothesis that lianas are increasing in importance in Neotropical forests, but longer time series will be required to detect shifts in life-form composition for highly dynamic seed and seedling communities.

Density and diversity of lianas along a chronosequence in a central Panamanian lowland forest

Results have shown that their important contribution to total basal area and biomass can continue as the forest matures, even as the numbers of established lianas declines.

Predicting Liana Crown Location from Stem Diameter in Three Panamanian Lowland Forests 1

In three forests that differed in annual rainfall and seasonality, the probability of a liana with a stem ≥2.0 cm stem diameter reaching the canopy was >50 percent and it is suggested that 2.0cm is the minium stem diameter to examine the abundance and diversity of canopy liana or canopy competition between lianas and trees.
