ABSTRACT:This essay examines three aspects of life on the Gold Coast during the mid-nineteenth century—slavery, racism, and political organizing—in terms of what they can reveal about the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade and connections between West Africa and the Americas in the abolitionist era.
