We present a Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 weak-lensing study of A520, where a previous analysis of ground-based data suggested the presence of a dark mass concentration. We map the complex mass structure in much greater detail, leveraging more than a factor of three increase in the number density of source galaxies available for lensing analysis. The "dark core" that is coincident with the X-ray gas peak, but not with any stellar luminosity peak, is now detected with… Expand

Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys Confirmation of the Dark Substructure in A520
We present the results from a weak gravitational lensing study of the merging cluster A520 based on the analysis of Hubble Space Telescope/Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) data. The excellent dataExpand
ON DARK PEAKS AND MISSING MASS: A WEAK-LENSING MASS RECONSTRUCTION OF THE MERGING CLUSTER SYSTEM A520*, **
Merging clusters of galaxies are unique in their power to directly probe and place limits on the self-interaction cross-section of dark matter. Detailed observations of several merging clusters haveExpand
The merging galaxy cluster A520 --- a broken-up cool core, a dark subcluster, and an X-ray channel
We present results from a deep Chandra X-ray observation of a merging galaxy cluster A520. A high-resolution gas temperature map, after the subtraction of the cluster-scale emission, reveals a longExpand
Sparse reconstruction of the merging A520 cluster system
Merging galaxy clusters present a unique opportunity to study the properties of dark matter in an astrophysical context. These are rare and extreme cosmic events in which the bulk of the baryonicExpand
MC2:galaxy imaging and redshift analysis of the merging cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301
X-ray and radio observations of CIZA J2242.8+5301 suggest that it is a major cluster merger. Despite being well studied in the X-ray and radio, little has been presented on the cluster structure andExpand
MC 2 : CONSTRAINING THE DARK MATTER DISTRIBUTION OF THE VIOLENT MERGING GALAXY CLUSTER CIZA J2242.8+5301 BY PIERCING THROUGH THE MILKY WAY
The galaxy cluster CIZA J2242.8+5301 at z = 0.19 is a merging system with a prominent (2 Mpc long) radio relic, which together with the morphology of the X-ray emission provides strong evidence for aExpand
Discovery of a Dissociative Galaxy Cluster Merger with Large Physical Separation
We present DLSCL J0916.2+2951 (z = 0.53), a newly discovered major cluster merger in which the collisional cluster gas has become dissociated from the collisionless galaxies and dark matter (DM). WeExpand
A massive cluster at z = 0.288 caught in the process of formation: The case of Abell 959
The largest galaxy clusters are observed still to be forming through major cluster-cluster mergers, often showing observational signatures such as radio relics and giant radio haloes. Using LOFARExpand
The Burst Cluster: Dark Matter in a Cluster Merger Associated with the Short Gamma-Ray Burst, GRB 050509B
We have identified a merging galaxy cluster with evidence of two distinct subclusters. The X-ray and optical data suggest that the subclusters are presently moving away from each other after closestExpand
On the cross-section of dark matter using substructure infall into galaxy clusters
We develop a statistical method to measure the interaction cross-section of dark matter, exploiting the continuous minor merger events in which small substructures fall into galaxy clusters. We findExpand

A Dark Core in Abell 520
The rich cluster Abell 520 (z = 0.201) exhibits truly extreme and puzzling multiwavelength characteristics. It may best be described as a "cosmic train wreck." It is a major merger showing abundantExpand
Discovery of a Ringlike Dark Matter Structure in the Core of the Galaxy Cluster Cl 0024+17
We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17 at z 0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strong- and weak-lensing constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a denseExpand
DARK MATTER IN THE GALAXY CLUSTER CL J1226+3332 AT z = 0.89
We present a weak-lensing analysis of the galaxy cluster CL J1226+3332 at z 0.89 using Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images. The cluster is the hottest (>10 keV), most X-rayExpand

Revealing the Properties of Dark Matter in the Merging Cluster MACS J0025.4–1222
We constrain the physical nature of dark matter using the newly identified massive merging galaxy cluster MACS J0025.4−1222. As was previously shown by the example of the Bullet Cluster (1E065756),Expand
A Direct Empirical Proof of the Existence of Dark Matter
We present new weak lensing observations of 1E0657-558 (z = 0.296), a unique cluster merger, that enable a direct detection of dark matter, independent of assumptions regarding the nature of theExpand
Light/mass offsets in the lensing cluster Abell 3827: evidence for collisional dark matter?
If dark matter has a non-zero self-interaction cross-section, then dark matter haloes of individual galaxies in cluster cores should experience a drag force from the ambient dark matter of theExpand
Creation of cosmic structure in the complex galaxy cluster merger Abell 2744
We present a detailed strong lensing, weak lensing and X-ray analysis of Abell 2744 (z = 0:308), one of the most actively merging galaxy clusters known. It appears to have unleashed ‘dark’, ‘ghost’,Expand
