Details of the processes through which galaxies convert their gas into stars need to be studied in order to obtain a complete picture of galaxy formation. One way to tackle these phenomena is to relate the H I gas and the stars in galaxies. Here, we present dynamical properties of damped and subdamped Lyman α (DLA) systems identified in Hα emission with VLT/SINFONI at near-infrared wavelengths. While the DLA towards Q0302 - 223 is found to be dispersion-dominated, the sub-DLA towards Q1009… Expand

A SINFONI integral field spectroscopy survey for galaxy counterparts to damped Lyman α systems - IV. Masses and gas flows
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) of typical galaxies is crucial to our understanding of the cycling of gas into, through and out of galaxies. One way to probe the CGM is to study gas around galaxiesExpand
A SINFONI integral field spectroscopy survey for galaxy counterparts to damped Lyman α systems – VI. Metallicity and geometry as gas flow probes
The use of background quasars provides a powerful tool to probe the cool gas in the circumgalactic medium of foreground galaxies. Here, we present new observations with SINFONI and X-Shooter ofExpand
A SINFONI integral field spectroscopy Survey for galaxy counterparts to Damped Lyman α Systems – V. Neutral and ionized-phase metallicities
The gas-phase and stellar metallicities have proven to be important parameters to constrain the star formation history of galaxies. However, HII regions associated with recent star-formation may notExpand
A SINFONI integral field spectroscopy survey for galaxy counterparts to damped Lyman α systems – III. Three additional detections
We report three additional Spectrograph for Integral Field Observations in the Near Infrared (SINFONI) detections of Hα emission line from quasar absorbers, two of which are new identifications.Expand
A study of the circumgalactic medium at z ∼ 0.6 using damped Lyman α galaxies
We present the study of a sample of nine QSO fields, with damped-Ly-alpha (DLA) or sub-DLA systems at z~0.6, observed with the X-Shooter spectrograph at the Very Large Telescope. By suitablyExpand
MULTIPHASE GAS IN GALAXY HALOS: THE O VI LYMAN-LIMIT SYSTEM TOWARD J1009+0713*
We have serendipitously detected a strong O VI-bearing Lyman-limit system (LLS) at z{sub abs} = 0.3558 toward the quasi-stellar object (QSO) J1009+0713 (z{sub em} = 0.456) in our survey ofExpand
The ESO UVES advanced data products quasar sample – VI. Sub-damped Lyman α metallicity measurements and the circumgalactic medium
The circumgalactic medium (CGM) can be probed through the analysis of absorbing systems in the line of sight to bright background quasars. We present measurements of the metallicity of a new sampleExpand
Nature of the absorbing gas associated with a galaxy group at z~0.4
We present new MUSE observations of quasar field Q2131-1207 with a log N(HI)=19.50+/-0.15 sub-DLA at z_abs=0.42980. We detect four galaxies at a redshift consistent with that of the absorber whereExpand
Characterizing the circum-galactic medium of damped Lyman-α absorbing galaxies
Gas flows in and out of galaxies through their circumgalactic medium (CGM) are poorly constrained and direct observations of this faint, diffuse medium remain challenging. We use a sample of five $z$Expand
Multiphase circumgalactic medium probed with MUSE and ALMA
Galaxy haloes appear to be missing a large fraction of their baryons, most probably hiding in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), a diffuse component within the dark matter halo that extends far fromExpand
