The characterization of spatial growth patterns is a pre-condition for the causal analysis of growth processes. The distribution of growth intensities in space are best expressed as Relative Elemental Growth Rates, (REGR). A multitude of alternative methods to determine REGR-profiles has been described, but a quantitative, comparative analysis is still lacking to date.
