Thermal cycling of generators, occurring during intermittent operation of power stations, increases the thermomechanical stress on the stator groundwall insulation and can, therefore, contribute to failure of the generator. Thermal cycling stresses can, to some extent, be replicated and accelerated in laboratory tests.
