Ribosomal gene sequence data are used to explore phylogenetic relationships among higher arthropod groups. Sequences of 139 taxa (23 outgroup and 116 ingroup taxa) representing all extant arthropod “classes” except Remipedia and Cephalocarida are analyzed using direct character optimization exploring six parameter sets. Parameter choice appears to be crucial to phylogenetic inference. The high level of sequence heterogeneity in the 18S rRNA gene (sequence length from 1350 to 2700 bp) makes…
The phylogenetic positions of three Basal-hexapod groups (protura, diplura, and collembola) based on ribosomal RNA gene sequences.
TLDR
This study combined complete 18S with partial 28S ribosomal RNA gene sequences to investigate the relations of basal hexapods, and found data are consistent with hexapod monophyly and Collembola grouped weakly with "Protura + Diplura" under most analytical conditions.
Bilaterian Phylogeny Based on Analyses of a Region of the Sodium–Potassium ATPase β-Subunit Gene
TLDR
Primers were developed to amplify a 1.3-kb region of the α subunit of the nuclear-encoded sodium–potassium ATPase α-subunit gene from 31 bilaterians representing several phyla to provide new data for deep-level metazoan phylogenetic studies, and ATPase-based trees support monophyly for several clades.
Adding mitochondrial sequence data (16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I) to the phylogeny of centipedes (Myriapoda: Chilopoda): an analysis of morphology and four molecular loci
TLDR
Relationships within Chilopoda (centipedes) are assessed based on 222 morphological characters, complete 18S rRNA sequences for 70 chilopod terminals, the D3 region of 28S r RNA for 65 terminals and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences for 45 terminals.
Some Unusual Small-Subunit Ribosomal RNA Sequences of Metazoans
TLDR
The use of information derived from secondary structure predictions combined with a new method to analyze DNA sequence data without multiple sequence alignments is proposed as a solution for analyzing sequence data that possess alternatively conservative and variable regions, such as ribosomal genes.
Mitochondrial DNA phylogeny of camel spiders (Arachnida: Solifugae) from Iran
TLDR
The mitochondrial DNA phylogeny of five solifuge families of Iran is presented using phylogenetic analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase, subunit 1 (COI) sequence data and revealed that the species Galeodes bacillatus, and Rhagodes melanochaetus are junior synonyms of G. caspius, and R. eylandti, respectively.
A phylogeny of ranid frogs (Anura: Ranoidea: Ranidae), based on a simultaneous analysis of morphological and molecular data

Cladistics : the international journal of the Willi Hennig Society
  • 2005
TLDR
The present study found that many Old World clades appear to contain both African and Asian taxa, contrary to the findings of some recent biogeographical analyses.

The position of arthropods in the animal kingdom: a search for a reliable outgroup for internal arthropod phylogeny.
TLDR
A cladistic approach to metazoan evolution including 133 18S rDNA sequences of 31 animal phyla is reported, suggesting that the Bilateria and Protostomia are monophyletic.
Phylogeny of the arachnid order Opiliones (Arthropoda) inferred from a combined approach of complete 18S and partial 28S ribosomal DNA sequences and morphology.
TLDR
The phylogenetic relationships among the main evolutionary lines of the arachnid order Opiliones were investigated by means of molecular and morphological data sets and the most supported hypothesis suggests that Palpatores are paraphyletic.
Internal phylogeny of the Chilopoda (Myriapoda, Arthropoda) using complete 18S rDNA and partial 28S rDNA sequences.
The internal phylogeny of the 'myriapod' class Chilopoda is evaluated for 12 species belonging to the five extant centipede orders, using 18S rDNA complete gene sequence and 28S rDNA partial gene
Molecular phylogeny of the major arthropod groups indicates polyphyly of crustaceans and a new hypothesis for the origin of hexapods.
TLDR
A phylogeny of the arthropods was inferred from analyses of amino acid sequences derived from the nuclear genes encoding elongation factor-1 alpha and the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II using maximum-parsimony, neighbor-joining, and maximum-likelihood methods, providing support for a Hexapoda/Branchiopoda clade, thus arguing against the monophyly of the traditionally defined Atelocerata.
First molecular evidence for the existence of a Tardigrada + Arthropoda clade.
TLDR
The results obtained represent the first molecular evidence for a Tardigrada + Arthropoda clade and indicate the need to review those obtained solely on morphological characters.

Molecular phylogeny of the animal kingdom.
TLDR
A rapid sequencing method for ribosomal RNA was applied to the resolution of evolutionary relationships among Metazoa, finding that coelomates radiated rapidly into four groups: chordates, echinoderms, arthropods, and eucoelomate protostomes.
18S Ribosomal RNA genes of insects : primary structure of the genes and molecular phylogeny of the Holometabola
TLDR
A sister group relationship of the Strepsiptera and the Diptera was found with both methods and with corrections for different substitution rates at different sites and for differences in the nucleotide composition.
Ribosomal DNA phylogeny of the major extant arthropod classes and the evolution of myriapods
TLDR
Using nuclear ribosomal gene sequences for constructing a molecular phylogeny, this work provides strong evidence that the crustaceans and not the myriapods should be considered to be the sister group of the insects.
