The coefficient of adaptive equalizer could monitor the channel response, such as fiber link polarization change, and the estimated carrier phase should also be included, if the equalizer uses constant modulus algorithm.
CNN Based Polarization Rotation Rate Estimation Using TIA Gain Monitoring in Integrated Coherent Receiver
A hardware efficient machine learning based polarization rotation rate estimation scheme by monitoring TIA gain in the standard integrated coherent receiver was experimentally verified with various signal formats and conditions.
Multiple Access Noise Compensation in CO-OFDMA-PON Uplink Transmission Using Digital Phase Conjugated-Pilot Tones
The transmission performance in terms of root-mean-square error, error-vector magnitude, bit-error-rate, and the overhead of redundant PTs was improved by using the proposed digital phase conjugated pilot-tones based MNs compensation technique in 20-km CO-OFDMA-PON uplink transmission.

Polarization dynamics in installed fiberoptic systems
This study monitors the polarization activity of operating light wave systems in urban and suburban areas. In 6 months of observation, multiple fast polarization fluctuations are detected, which are,

A simple inline polarization monitoring scheme that detects fiber disturbances, enabling proactive protection against fast state-of-polarization transients induced by transmission-fiber disturbances is presented.
Proactive Fiber Damage Detection in Real-time Coherent Receiver
This work develops an algorithm extension for a coherent receiver, coupled with machine learning, for recognizing fiber breaks before they occur, and demonstrates event classification with 95% accuracy over a real-time PDM-QPSK testbed.
Extremely fast (microsecond timescale) polarization changes in high speed long haul WDM transmission systems
Causes for microsecond timescale polarization changes in high speed WDM transmission systems were analyzed experimentally. Coiled patch cables and spooled DCF in combination with mechanical
Distributed fiber-optic intrusion sensor system
A distributed sensor system for detecting and locating intruders based on the phase-sensitive optical-time-domain reflectometer (/spl phi/-OTDR) is described. The sensing element is a cabled

Relation between fiber parameters and polarization changes due to mechanical vibration was investigated experimentally. We first revealed that smaller MFD non-circularity and fiber spin reduce
Proactive restoration of optical links based on the classification of events
A new method of proactive protection/restoration where the schemes are triggered before the optical fiber is cut to reduce loss of data in case of a fiber cut and thus to improve network availability is proposed.
