This thesis proposes a novel approach towards the design of artificially creative systems based on a phenomenological account of human creativity and the analysis of existing approaches towards the same task through the exemplary study of artificial jazz improvisation. It will be argued that in symbolic approaches towards creativity, similarity measures between symbols play a vital role in the modelling of human phenomena.
